It started because of a rash of really crazy stories on the front page back in 2010. The idea originally was for a wall calendar, but as we always seemed to have more than 12 every year, an elimination round was necessary.

Why stop at the elimination round when we can vote for a winner? That’s when it evolved into a pagaent.

I think the “batshit” name came from the theme of those back-to-back stories at the time we came up with it. There are too many posts tagged with Batshitbabes201x to change it now.

I keep waiting for the moment when you will actually be serious about your initial assertions that you want to learn more about feminism and sexism from the perspective of women who experience it. Yet every time I see a woman here on Oppo offer you a gentle (or not so gentle) criticism, you ignore or dismiss it, like you did with LBC earlier tonight.

Also, thanks for the valentine. I see you gave one to a handful of other Oppos, as well, including $kay. Interesting to note that the valentines you posted to men were all related to their personalities or known areas of interest while the valentines you gave to the couple of women you singled out were romantic or gendered in nature and had literally nothing to do with our expressed interests or personalities. I mean, it’s not even hard to figure out. $kay likes GTs. I like Texas and Mustangs. But, y’know... We’re “ladies” so... Heart shaped chocolates, amirite?

One last criticism in response to the mea culpa you replied with last month:

I’m not a “curiosity” for you to behold. But the fact that you would describe me as an object, especially right after I objected to the way your previous descriptions of me were patronizing (Really? “Spunky?” Come on. I’m not 12), are incredibly telling.

(Oh, and in case it wasn’t obvious, these few comments we’ve shared back and forth over the past couple of months? This was me attempting to dialogue with you, as you requested, though perhaps in not the same ally cookie-awarding manner you were hoping for. I don’t hold punches and I don’t coddle).

Good morning Flower Girl, I’ll start here.

First, please understand my motives in editing that post. The initial post was stupid and childish and I wish I could delete it. I agree with you that the entire BSB thing is sexist and I sold myself out. The woman in the story was Darwin stupid, and that’s all I should have said about it. And Darwin stupid is not shared by any dominant group of people.

Second, to the valentines: My motives there were very simple: try to make a few Opponauts smile on Valentine’s Day, folks who are smart and interesting and who have taken the time to pay attention to me (isn’t that what Oppo is really about, anyway?). And hurriedly, I did pay attention to details that they’d revealed. For example, $kay’s Valentine had a dog on it, because she has shown that she likes her dogs. Your Valentine was the first that I wanted to send, and what did I have to go on? When I first became aware of you in this space, you were Flower Girl , not Flower Girl Likes Mustangs . Or whatever. I personally think flowers are a waste of money, and I like chocolate, so that’s what I sent.

Third, to the gender of the various people for whom you speak in your lengthy post above: this space is so male-dominated that it frankly does not occur to me to question the gender of the commenters and you are well to point out that I ought to. Thank you for pointing that out.

Finally, to mea culpa : my worldview says that people sometimes do things that they later wish they hadn’t, and civility entitles them to own what they wish they hadn’t done and to work not to do it any more. So it is here, with my post. I’m looking to develop one set of standards for myself, then posting childish things that fall short of those standards. I think you deserve better than that. But my worldview also says that seeking offense in the actions of others, and not assuming positive intent, is a great way to feel grumpy. So I try to avoid taking offense whenever possible, and I try to assume positive intent. I am not always successful.

I do appreciate that you care enough to post what you’ve posted here. To the extent that I became defensive, I apologize. Thank you.
